Thursday, March 13, 2014 Great Lakes shipping season poised to beginThe start of the 2014 Great Lakes shipping is about to start, with the Soo Locks set to open on March 25. The Soo Locks enable ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder has been making preliminary cuts through the ice to help get the harbor area ready, but bigger icebreakers will be needed to deal with the large amounts of ice covering Lake Superior. If the ice remains as widespread as it is now, ship movement may involve convoys of vessels following behind an ice breaker that cuts a trail across the lake, according to Adele Yorde with the Seaway Port Authority.
