"It brings a new capability to meet the needs of our customers who transport their break bulk and non-container project cargo across our docks," said SPA head Jim Newsome in statement. The crane, which has a 500- to 740-ton lift capacity, is owned and operated by Charleston Heavy Lift Inc. The S.C. State Port Authority said it invested $2.5 million of its own money into the machine "to ensure priority access and dedicated service ... for Port of Charleston terminals." Ocean Ranger features a 162-foot-long lifting boom and was created primarily for heavy project cargo movement lifts to and from ships carrying bulky items that won't fit into containers. It can also lift goods on barges, railcars, trucks and container carriers. Local company Metal Trades manufactured the crane at its shipyard on Yonge's Island.
