China Shipping orders five 18,000-TEU ULCVs
China Shipping is poised to spend $2.2 billion on five 18,000-TEU Ultra Large Container Vessels and a fleet of gas carriers.
After Maersk, China Shipping Container Lines will become the second container line to operate these mega-sized vessels, which will be the largest container ships in the world. Maersk's first 18,000-TEU Triple-E class ship is scheduled for delivery in late June.
Shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries will build the ships, which will be deployed on the Asia-Europe route.
Each ship will cost in "the region of $130 million to $140 million," depending on specifications, said Martin Rowe, the managing director of Clarksons Asia in Hong Kong.
In partnership with Mitsui OSK, China Shipping has also verified a $1.51 billion order with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in Shanghai for six liquefied natural gas carriers.
